Music

The Department of Music offers three programs of instruction at the undergraduate level: two baccalaureates in arts (BA concentration and honours) and a baccalaureate in music (BMus).

The BA programs offer thorough training in the academic aspects of musical study. Together with the opportunity to enroll in courses outside the department, these programs provide a solid basis for careers in music journalism, musicology, arts administration and (with additional pedagogical study) teaching.

The BMus program offers more rigorous training in both the practical and academic facets of musical study. Applied instruction covers the full range of orchestral instruments, as well as piano, harpsichord, organ, fortepiano, saxophone, guitar, recorder, and voice. Participation in diverse instrumental and vocal groups provides valuable ensemble experience. In the third year of study, BMus students must choose between six profiles each of which provides the basis for careers in performance, musicology, theory, composition, music education, and piano pedagogy. A seventh profile, designated as general, allows BMus students more flexibility in choice of courses.

Each of these degree programs may be augmented with a concentration in arts administration that adds professional administrative training for musicians, actors and visual artists.

The Department of Music is responsible for course codes beginning with MUS and AMT.

The Music Students’ Association (ADEMSA) comprises an elected body of students from any of the three programs in Music. It promotes student activities (concerts, campus broadcasts, social gatherings), provides a reference center for student teachers, acts as a liaison between students, professors and administration, and appoints student representatives to various departmental and faculty committees.
