Second Language

The bilingual character of the University of Ottawa accords the Second Language Institute a unique position
in teaching English and French as second languages and in conducting research in the field of second language
pedagogy.

The mandate of the SLI is to provide students with the means to improve their proficiency in the second
official language in order to reach the desired level of bilingualism. To accomplish this task, the institute first
evaluates the students’ second language skills and then provides a series of courses which are geared to expand
the students’ linguistic horizons.

The institute offers seven types of courses:

1. preparatory courses for students at the beginner level who have no knowledge of the second official
language;
2. courses for the development of advanced language skills which are open to all students;
3. specialized courses offered as part of the concentration in French as a second language (second program);
4. advanced courses in English as a foreign language within the "Certificate in advanced english and EFL pedagogy for teachers from non-english speaking backgrounds" program offered in collaboration with the Faculty of Education;
5. sheltered programs given in conjunction with various departments in which students improve their second language skills by taking a subject-matter course paired with a second language course specific to their language needs in the subject-matter course;
6. non-credit intensive and semi-intensive second language courses;
7. courses for University of Ottawa staff members.

The Second Language Institute is responsible for courses with codes beginning with ESL and FLS.

Sheltered courses

The institute offers a series of sheltered courses in conjunction with various departments: History, Sociology, Linguistics, Political Science and the School of Psychology. The aim of sheltered courses is the acquisition of second-language skills through the study of a subject-matter course given in the second language. The courses are taught by the subject-matter professor in collaboration with a language teacher.

Sheltered courses are offered at an intermediate and advanced level in the second language and act as a transition between a traditional language course and a regular subject-matter course given in the students’ second language. Work periods related to the course are provided in the second language to help students meet the requirements of the course. Students obtain the credits for both the subject-matter course and the language course.

For further information, contact the Second Language Institute at (613)562-5743.
