Translation and Interpretation

The school teaches professional translation as it is currently practised in government and business in Canada. Courses cover not only translation (general, specialized and technical), but also documentary research, professional writing, terminology and lexicology, applications of computers to translation, and theoretical aspects of translation. The school also offers an introduction to interpretation, and Spanish translation courses.

The school offers a regular honours BA in translation and an accelerated honours BA in translation. Within the regular honours BA a co-operative education option, combining academic studies with practical work experience, is offered.

The two honours BA programs prepare students for a career in general translation, provide them with the basics for specialized and technical translation, and train them for other positions where writing skills in both official languages are the prime qualification.

Within the programs there are two branches: English-French (for Francophone students) and French-English (for Anglophone students). Furthermore, for each of these branches, there is a trilingual option (French-Spanish-English) (see note 1) and a bilingual professional writing option (see note 2) .

The honours BA programs are normally offered on a full-time basis. An entrance examination determines admission.

The co-op option of the regular honours BA is intended for students who have completed the first two years of the program and meet specific requirements.

Regular BA students are admitted into the trilingual option (see note 1) after completing the first two years of the BA program and passing ESP3992 or its equivalent.

Regular BA students are admitted into the bilingual professional writing option (see note 2) after completing the first two years of the BA program and passing TRA2722 and TRA2788 with a minimum final mark of B+.

The accelerated honours BA is intended for students who already hold a university degree. They are admitted into third year, and their program is slightly different from the regular honours BA. Accelerated BA students are admitted into the trilingual option (see note 1) after passing ESP3992 or its equivalent. They are admitted into the bilingual professional writing option (see note 2) on the basis of the entrance examination result.

The School of Translation and Interpretation is responsible for courses with codes beginning with TRA.

Honours BA in Translation - Co-operative Education Option (Regular program - French-English option)

The co-op option involves the same courses and requirements as the regular program (French-English option), except that study terms alternate with work terms. The following table presents the program requirements per term starting at the beginning of second year.

To be eligible, students must meet the following conditions:

1. full-time registration in the honours BA in translation;

2. successful completion of all second-year compulsory TRA courses;

3. obtain a minimum grade point average of 6.0 (B);

4. obtain a minimum grade of B in the translation courses into the dominant language;

5. recommendation by the undergraduate committee of the STI.

It is understood that applicants will be selected on the basis not only of the conditions indicated above but also of the number of places available (which depends on the number of employers willing to participate in the program).
