Arabic Language and Culture

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures offers a minor in Arabic language and culture.

Arabic is one of the world's major languages. It is spoken daily by over 300 million people - and is actually used for prayer by 1.2 billion people worldwide.

The minor in Arabic language and culture provides students not only with a good knowledge of the language itself, but also with an invaluable window into Arabic culture, history, literature, philosophy, religion and society. Some courses are given jointly with other departments of the Faculty of Arts (History, Religious Studies, Philosophy).

Thanks to agreements between the University of Ottawa and others in the Arab world, some of our students can go on exchange programs in countries such as Jordan, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Lebanon.
