The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures offers a range of courses focusing on Russian and Polish language, history and culture.

Russian and Polish belong to the Slavic group of languages, which are widely spoken throughout Central and Eastern Europe. Knowledge of one Slavic language gives a unique insight into the culture, history and politics of Eastern Europe, and, given the many features shared by Slavic languages, eases the learning of other Slavic languages.

Russian is spoken in Russia and throughout the former Soviet Union. The work of Russian writers and artists in ballet, cinema, theatre and painting is internationally renowned. Since the fall of communism, the Russian economy and Russian life in general have gained new vigour. Russia, the largest country in the world geographically, has a population of some 145 million, is easy to visit and offers a fascinating range of exciting experiences.

For its part, Poland, with nearly 40 million inhabitants, is one of the most populous countries in Central Europe. Its cultural heritage and strong links to Canada make it an ideal tourist destination. As well, the opening of its economy in the wake of its integration with the European Union creates exciting possibilities for work and study.
