MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
INSPIRED BY THE SAME PASSION
In the Faculty of Science, our strength is our "people": our students, our support staff, our professors. People who are inspired by the same passion to discover while working together in a collegial context.
OUR PROGRAMS
Year after year, the Faculty recruits an unparalleled number of students. We need only think of the biomedical science program, which boasts the highest admission numbers on the campus. Our students benefit from an education that is carefully adapted to the demands of the job market and of professional programs.
The content of our programs is constantly brought up to date to reflect the latest in scientific and technological advances. As a result, effective September 2011, a new program has been added to the Faculty of Science, an Honours B.Sc. in Financial Mathematics and Economics in addition to a new option, the Extended French Stream.
ACTIVE AND RENOWNED RESEARCHERS
Our professors are experts, active researchers, who by their excellence and passion for science, greatly contribute to the success the University of Ottawa enjoys across the country. If our institution is ranked fifth in research intensity among the great Canadian universities, it is largely because of the discoveries of our researchers.
The reputations of "Tito" Scaiano, Xiaoyi Bao, Thomas Brabec, Howard Alper, David Sankoff, Jan Veizer and Jules Blais - to name only a few - in the fields of photochemistry, photonics, catalysis, mathematics, the global carbon cycle, and environmental genomics, surpass Canadian borders.
In addition to this group of acclaimed researchers, over the last few years young dynamic professors have distinguished themselves both in their teaching and in their research work in innovative areas such as physical biostatistics, bioinformatics, the environment and the Canadian Shield.
OUR SUPPORT STAFF
It is impossible to speak of the Faculty of Science without saying a word about our support staff. These people are without a doubt one of the most important cogs in our faculty; we could not get along without them. The dedication of this wonderful team is remarkable.
HIGH QUALITY INSTALLATIONS
The Faculty of Science is also high-quality installations. The teaching laboratories in the biosciences complex are among the best in North America. Once they arrive on campus, whether it is in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences or Biochemistry, our students have the opportunity to work with the most sophisticated equipment.
OUR ATMOSPHERE, SOURCE OF PRIDE
Our students are at the centre of our mission. There is a strong collegial spirit and good will among everyone in our faculty. This very special atmosphere is my greatest source of pride as Dean, and as a former student of the faculty.
