Nursing

The School of Nursing offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in English and in French.

These programs lead to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Ottawa:

• The four-year baccalaureate program is offered in collaboration with Algonquin College and La Cité collégiale. French language stream students take classes at the University while English stream students take classes at Algonquin College (Pembroke or Woodroffe campus) or at the University. Internships take place in francophone, anglophone or bilingual settings.
• The School also offers a 24-month second-entry program, a bridge program for registered practical nurses and a bridge program for internationally educated nurses.

Upon graduation, students are qualified to write the Canadian Registered Nurses Examination (CRNE) administered by the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Undergraduate curriculum goals
The goal of the undergraduate curriculum is to train professional nurses who can function effectively and competently in a variety of health settings, respond to a large range of health care needs and serve as change agents. Graduates are critical thinkers, self-directed learners and practitioners who can function both independently and collaboratively when providing nursing care. Graduates are eligible to write the Canadian Registered Nurse examination administered by the College of Nurses of Ontario. They will have the necessary background to enter graduate school.

Employment during enrolment
Students enrolled in the general program may seek employment; however, the School does not assume responsibility for their nursing actions during this period. Should they choose to work in a health care agency, they may be hired as unregulated health care aides. It is the prerogative of the employing agency to determine the scope of students' responsibilities.

During the winter session of fourth year, baccalaureate program students must register with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) for the Canadian Registered Nurses Examination. The CNO sends all necessary information directly to eligible students.
