Course descriptions


DLS1200 Introduction to Second Language Teaching 6 cr.
Second language teaching: definition, basic concepts, related disciplines and overview of their respective contributions. Major trends in the evolution of second language teaching. Critical overview of traditional, audiolingual, cognitive and communicative approaches. Study of selected current methods. Format and organization of second language programs in Canadian schools. Students are encouraged to take this course in the language they are planning to teach.

DLS1600 Introduction � la didactique des langues secondes 6 cr.
Didactique des langues secondes: d�finition, sch�mas conceptuels, disciplines connexes et aper�u de leurs contributions respectives. Les grands courants qui ont marqu� l'�volution de la didactique des langues secondes. Aper�u critique des approches traditionnelles, audio-orale, cognitive et communicative. �tude de quelque m�thodes modernes. Les types de programmes scolaires et leur organisation dans les �coles canadiennes. Il est recommand� de suivre ce cours dans la langue qu'on se pr�pare � enseigner.

DLS2101 Listening and Reading 3 cr.
Implications of psycholinguistic theory for teaching listening and reading comprehension skills. Practice in designing programmes, materials and exercises adapted to different clienteles and consistent with current psycholinguistic principles. This course is reserved for students registered in the B.A. in SLT. Prerequisite: or corequisite: DLS1200.

Systematic observation and analysis of selected second language classes work with master teacher, including aspects of class preparation, teaching process, student assessment and program evaluation. Prerequisite: DLS1200

Language laboratories, projectors, audio and video recorders: types and uses. The computer: operation and place in second language teaching; study of software; introduction to individualized programs. Video-disks. Prerequisite: DLS1200

Contexts and models of immersion programs. Research findings; examples of curricula, materials, appropriate methodology, assessment techniques. Sociocultural implications. Students may emphasize primary, junior or senior levels. Prerequisite: DLS1200

DLS3103 English for Specific Purposes 3 cr.
Origins and development of ESP in educational and occupational contexts. Basic principles and techniques in needs assessment and course design. Appropriate applications. Examples of ESP curricula, materials, methodologies and assessment techniques. Prerequisite: DLS1200

DLS3104 Curriculum and Teaching Materials in Second Language Education 3 cr.
Principles of curriculum development. Practice in the development of a variety of syllabus types, with emphasis on selection, sequencing and integration of components. Skill and subject integration. Critical evaluation of teaching materials. Prerequisite: DLS1200

DLS3105 Language Education in a Multicultural Setting: from Theory to Practice 3 cr.
An overview of the history, theoretical foundations and educational policies of multicultural and anti-racist education in Canada. Role of culture in language learning and teaching. Description of existing models of multicultural and anti-racist education. Development of a theoretical framework for language teaching in a multicultural classroom. Classroom practice: methodology, design of teaching materials and evaluation.

Description des mod�les actuels pour l'enseignement multiculturel et antiraciste. �laboration d'une structure th�orique pour l'enseignement des langues en milieu multiculturel. Applications pratiques en classe: m�thodologie, conception du mat�riel p�dagogique et �valuation.

Introduction to the issues of the role of grammar in second language teaching; role of explicit grammar teaching in the acquisition of both oral and written communicative competence. Introduction to explicit and implicit strategies to facilitate acquisition of grammatical knowledge; grammar correction activities.

Sensibilisation � la probl�matique grammaticale dans un cours de langue seconde; place et utilit� de l'enseignement explicite de la grammaire dans l'acquisition de la comp�tence de la communication orale et de la communication �crite. Initiation aux diverses techniques d'enseignement; approche explicite et implicite. Exercices de grammaire.
