Special Project Supervised research/material development project to be evaluated for content and academic language use. The project may be based on some of the special language teaching resources in the University, e.g., Multimedia Laboratories (FA), Writing Centre (FA), Learning Resource Centre (FE), Second Language Resource Centre - Learning Section (SLI), Research and Evaluation Sector (SLI); or in the region (e.g., immersion education). The project may also involve issues relating to language teaching in the student's home country. Course reserved for students in the Advanced English and EFL Pedagogy Certificate program.

ESL1111	Oral and Written Communication in English as a Second Language: Elementary Level I	(4,0,0) 3 cr.
Development of basic language knowledge (pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar). Identification and understanding of topic, facts, and the main and supporting ideas of oral and written texts. Practice in simple oral exchanges. Introduction to written expression. These credits exclude those of ESL1211.Auditors are not permitted. BACK TO TOP

ESL2111	Oral and Written Communication in English as a Second Language: Intermediate Level I	(4,0,0) 3 cr.
Comprehension of varied written and oral texts. Development of note-taking skills. Written expression at the sentence and paragraph levels. Oral communication through guided conversation and short presentations. Further development of grammatical knowledge. Prerequisite: ESL1112 or ESL1211 or equivalent. ESL2112	Oral and Written Communication in English as a Second Language: Intermediate Level II	(4,0,0) 3 cr.
Comprehension of general and academic written and oral texts. Written expression at the paragraph and text levels. Development of oral communication through discussions and presentations. ESL2122	Advanced Oral Language Skills for Second Language Learners	(3,0,0) 3 cr.
Development and refinement of listening skills as a basis for oral communication. Introduction to critical listening. Practice in note-taking. Production of extended oral texts. ESL2181	Sheltered Course	(1.5,0,0) 3 cr.
Discipline-based second language course. This course is an adjunct to the three-credit discipline courses selected in the program for that purpose. It allows for the development of proficiency in the second language while acquiring knowledge and expertise in the specific discipline. Prerequisites: ESL2112 or ESL2211 or equivalent. ESL2361	Advanced Composition for Second Language Learners I	(3,0,0) 3 cr.
Organization and development of expository prose in formal English. Practice in achieving appropriateness of expression; grammatical refinement and vocabulary development. Prerequisite: ESL2121 or equivalent. Auditors are not permitted. BACK TO TOP

ESL2371	Advanced English Grammar for Second Language Learners I	(3,0,0) 3 cr.
Review of parts of speech and their functions, determiners, and prepositions; the English verb system including tenses, gerunds, infinitives and modals; compound and complex sentences. Prerequisites: ESL2121 and ESL2122 or equivalent. Auditors are not permitted. BACK TO TOP

ESL2372	English Pronunciation for Second Language Speakers	(3,0,0) 3 cr.
Improvement of pronunciation through instruction and practice focusing on the segmentals (e.g., articulation of sounds) and the suprasegmentals (e.g., major stress patterns, intonation and rhythm). Development of self-monitoring and self-correction strategies. Individual practice. Prerequisites: ESL2112 or ESL2211 or equivalent. Auditors are not permitted. BACK TO TOP

ESL3265	Advanced English for EFL/ESL Teaching	6 cr.
Development of specialized English language skills for EFL/ESL teaching. Introduction of concepts, learning of terminology and analysis of language conventions related to instruction of the four language skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing) and component skills (grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation), curriculum design (including materials development and testing), teaching methodology, and classroom management. Observation and analysis of instructional language use by experienced teachers in ESL classrooms. Course reserved for students in the Advanced English and EFL Pedagogy Certificate program. Systematic development of academic vocabulary. Forms and meanings of words. Word formation rules (roots and affixes). Word origins. Semantic and thematic grouping of lexical items. ESL3375	The Cultural Dimension of Communication in a Second Language	(3,0,0) 3 cr.
