NSG1210 Nursing and Health I 5 cr.
Introduction to the concept of health and nursing as a health care option. Beginning level examination of the ecosystem and Canada's sociopolitical environment with an emphasis on determinants of health and risk factor identification. Cultural and spiritual influences on health and illness are examined. Historical perspectives and current dimensions of professional nursing practice with a focus on responsibility and accountability are discussed. The nature of the client and client situations are explored. Sources of nursing knowledge, nursing paradigms and nursing process are introduced in the context of professional practice. NSG1220 Nursing and Health II 3 cr.
Introduction to health promotion, illness and injury prevention, epidemiological principles, teaching-learning and change theories. The learner explores a variety of interventions to enhance, maintain and protect health. Particular attention to gender issues in health. Professional standards and ethical codes are examined in light of the learner's clinical experiences. Specific nursing theories are used to explain clinical perspectives. A variety of nursing theories and models as well as their relevance and implications for nursing practice are emphasized throughout the course. NSG2115 Integration II 2 cr.
Elements of professional practice are considered including ethical decision-making, legal implications, collaborative and interdisciplinary practice and local professional organizations. Group process and conflict resolution in health care teams and client groups are addressed. The learner explores influences of self as nurse and as family member on nurse client relationships. Helping relationships with family as client are explored. Characteristics of various client groups are examined in light of the student's area of clinical practice. Use of an increasing repertoire of learning strategies enhance scholarly development. Student begins to set personal and professional learning goals. NSG2200 Nursing and Health III 6 cr.
Focus on individuals across the life span and families as client in the context of their communities. Health needs of particular groups in situations of normality, predictable developmental stressors and, to a lesser extent, risk, crisis, and morbidity are studied. Community resources relevant to the clients' geographic area are explored. Intervention strategies related to enhancing, maintaining and protecting health are addressed. Modifications in nursing approaches to meet developmental needs across the life span and to prevent crises are identified. NSG3108 Introduction to Nursing Science Concepts and Theories 3 cr.
Introduction to the terminology of theoretical thinking and some concepts and theories in the developing science of nursing. Conceptual domains of person, environment, health and nursing are compared in several grand theories of nursing. Topics discussed include: purposes and levels of theory and relationship among nursing practice, theory development and research; substantive assumptions underlying nursing process and three types of clinical judgements contributing to nursing care; middle theories of nursing diagnosis.

Examination of selected themes from nursing and support courses. Elements of professional practice and ethical/legal issues pertaining to the various clinical settings are explored. The student begins to select specific situations from practice and engages in critical reflection. NSG3116 Nursing and Health 3 cr.
Examination of evolution of health concepts in domains of both health professionals and traditional healers, using a nursing theory and nursing process frameworks; determinants of health and elements critical to ecological balance; importance of health promotion frameworks in guiding nursing practice. Intervention tools and provincial and federal mandates are explored. Key epidemiological concepts used in the assessment of risk are examined. Students apply epidemiological principles to define target groups, assess patterns of risk, select and evaluate risk reduction strategies.

NSG3118 Nursing as a Social Force 3 cr.
Effectiveness of nurses and nursing in influencing social systems examined in a historical, economic, and cultural context. Theories of leadership and change, policy development and political process are incorporated. Students critically analyze current issues in nursing in the context of the theoretical bases of the course.

NSG3120 Ethical and Legal Basis for Nursing 3 cr.
Examination of the ethical and legal dimensions of nursing practice. Values, cultural impact on moral stances, ethical principles, nursing ethics, rights and responsibilities of clients and practitioners, ethical decision-making and application of legal principles in health care are discussed. Students identify their own values and the values of the health care system. Legal implications for nursing are discussed and students systematically analyze ethical dilemmas.

NSG3122 Therapeutic Interaction: Individual and Group 3 cr.
Focuses on developing skills of facilitation, behaviour change, problem-solving, interpersonal interaction, and assertiveness in both one-to- one and group contexts to increase nurses' sensitivity to psychosocial issues confronting clients throughout the health care system. Special emphasis on modification of communication for special clients such as the elderly and those from other cultural groups. Micro counselling format and other counselling/communications models are organizing frameworks.

NSG3130 Nursing and Health IV 6 cr.
Examines the concepts of risk, morbidity and crisis as they relate to prevalent health problems using a variety of theoretical perspectives. Supportive care of individuals across the lifespan in the context of their family and community is explored, with an emphasis on evidence based practice. The socio-political environment for care and principles of service planning are addressed. Prerequisite: NSG2200 Corequisites: NSG3115,NSG3235.NSG3130A6 cr.

NSG3140 Nursing and Health V 2 cr.
Focus on the principles and practices which support disease prevention and health promotion of populations. Students are introduced to concepts of aggregates and communities. Epidemiological tools to assess and monitor community trends, determine risk identify vulnerable or underserved populations, and priority health issues affecting aggregates and communities are discussed. Students are introduced to nursing and health promotion planning models of programs targeting aggregates and communities. Qualitative approaches for community assessment are explored. NSG3235 Practicum IV 8 cr.
Application of principles and concepts learned in NSG3130.Students assess, plan, implement and evaluate the nursing care of individuals across the lifespan in the context of the family and community with prevalent health problems. Clinical settings include laboratory, health care facilities, and/or home care settings. Prerequisite: NSG2235 Corequisites: NSG3130,NSG3320.NSG3235A8 cr.

NSG3245 Practicum V 3 cr.
Students identify the health status of a community or aggregate and priority health issues. The process includes dialoguing with community members to explore alternate perspectives of community health problems. Community nursing diagnoses are formulated based on the analysis and interpretation of both quantitative and qualitative assessment data. Students share results and obtain feedback from colleagues and community members in order to develop nursing objectives. Prerequisite: NSG2235 NSG3245A3 cr.

NSG3302 Research in Nursing and Health 3 cr.
Research methods, critical evaluation and appraisal of research on health care. Concepts and principles underlying development of studies and criteria for evaluation are applied to studies employing various research models. Identification of components of research studies, strengths and weaknesses, and implications for practice. Prerequisite: or corequisite(s): HSS2381.NSG3302A3 cr.

NSG3308 Community Health Nursing - Theory 3 cr.
Examination of concepts, principles and approaches relevant to first level practice in community health nursing. Focus on nursing of families and population groups using a nursing theory and nursing process. Content is organized around health promotion, illness prevention, health maintenance, populations at risk and levels of prevention. Exploration of the health care system in terms of structure, function, distribution of client (individuals, families, community) needs and the role of the nurse. Prerequisites: NSG3108,NSG3116 NSG3308 and NSG3309 must be taken within two consecutive semesters.

NSG3309 Community Health Nursing - Clinical 3 cr.
Guided clinical practice in selected community settings facilitates the application of theoretical concepts and skill development. Clinical conferences with faculty members assist students in relating theory to practice. Prerequisite: NSG3308

NSG3313 Health Assessment 3 cr.
Holistic nursing assessment of individuals' health using a nursing theory for primary prevention assessment and intervention. Key epidemiological concepts are used to assess individuals' risk. Development of advanced assessment skills necessary to conduct system-directed examination of healthy adults. Students also describe deviations from normal and have a beginning ability to direct the physical assessment relevant to these findings. This course comprises a 1-credit laboratory component.

NSG3320 Nursing and Mental Disorders 3 cr.
Concepts of mental illness, etiology, symptomatology and approaches to therapy are discussed from a perspective of nursing practice and intervention. Stress, defense mechanisms, maladaptive behaviours and severe behaviour disorders are examined. Corequisite: NSG3235.

NSG3645 Stage clinique V 3 cr.
Les �tudiants d�crivent l'�tat de sant� d'une communaut� et identifient les questions de sant� prioritaires. La d�marche comprend des �changes avec la communaut� afin de permettre aux gens d'exprimer leur perception des probl�mes de sant� de leur communaut�. NSG4106 Psychosocial Nursing 3 cr.
Enhancement of nurses' ability to deal with psychosocial issues and provide relevant and effective nursing care to individuals and groups. Focus on demonstrating the ability to follow the client through exploration, understanding and action phases of the therapeutic relationship using a counselling/communications framework. Additional emphasis will be placed on the group as client. Nursing process, nursing diagnosis and a nursing conceptual model will be utilized to ensure holistic care. Prerequisite: NSG3122 This course comprises a 1-credit clinical component.

NSG4110 Family Dynamics in Nursing Practice 3 cr.
Using an appropriate nursing model and family theory, this course will help the nurse to gain basic knowledge of family dynamics, and the different elements which affect family dynamics. Building on this theoretical base, the emphasis will be on enabling the nurse to assess a family's dynamics and health status. This focus is in order to help the family increase their awareness concerning their health status, health patterns and movement towards the family's self-care.

NSG4114 Concepts of Child Health Nursing - Part 2 3 cr.
Increases students' awareness and knowledge of internal and external variables that impact on the nursing care of ill children. Concepts of child health nursing in both the primary and tertiary care settings are discussed. This course introduces the theoretical foundations of the process of patient teaching in nursing. The role of education in health care and learning needs associated with health status are examined. Course content includes current learning theories and factors affecting patient learning. Selected teaching strategies and criteria for development of teaching materials will be reviewed. Development of knowledge in breast-feeding and health promotion strategies to assist the student to promote, support and protect breast-feeding at the individual, family, aggregate and community levels. Socio-cultural, developmental, physiological and psychological determinants of breast-feeding within the context of health promotion frameworks and Neuman's Systems Model. Issues around infant feeding increase understanding of the importance of coalition building, advocacy, social marketing, healthy public policy and creating supportive community environments. This course uses a systems approach to examine concepts in pathophysiology as a basis for advanced nursing practice in primary health care. Common themes that interface with pathophysiological concepts such as changes throughout the lifespan, stress, pain and cellular proliferation will be integrated into each system. NSG4211 Critical Care Neonatal Nursing 6 cr.
Using a nursing model, increases competence in the identification and management of the critically ill neonate. Emphasis is placed on discussion of pathophysiological process, patient assessment, problem identification, formulation of a plan of care, and management of the neonate during the critical phases of illness. The 78-hour clinical component will focus on the integration and application of classroom theory to nursing care of the critically-ill neonate. Clinical experience will be used to develop and refine cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills. Students take an active role in assessing laboratory data, decision-making and patient care in the NICU. They acquire the skills needed to intervene in crisis identification and management of the critically-ill neonate. Prerequisite: NSG4209

Application of principles and concepts learned in NSG4130.Students work as part of an interdisciplinary team to assess, plan, intervene and evaluate the nursing care of individuals across the lifespan with complex health problems in the context of the family and community. NSG4290 Advanced Health Assessment and Diagnosis 8 cr.
This theory and practice course is designed to prepare students to conduct a full range of health assessments towards the goal of providing comprehensive and holistic care and determining/monitoring health status and disease symptomatology of clients throughout the age spectrum. Emphasis will be placed on the delivery of the major components of primary health care services: health promotion, prevention of disease, and injuries, cure, rehabilitation and support services. Students will further advance their clinical decision-making and diagnostic reasoning skills in care of individuals, families and communities at various stages of development. This course examines the basic principles of palliation as they apply to the nursing care of dying patients and their families. Using a nursing practice model, nursing diagnoses common to palliative patients are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on examining the various nursing strategies that assist patients and families to cope with the dying and grieving process. The clinical component provides students with the opportunity to apply a theoretical nursing framework when caring for dying patients and their family and to interact with community agencies supportive to palliative patients and their families. Study of aging in Canada from individual and population perspectives. Examines size, composition and distribution of the senior population as well as social and cultural theories of aging. Social and cultural institutions as well as contemporary problems and issues affecting senior Canadians will be studied. Students meet directly with representative groups of aging population.

NSG4316 Concepts and Strategies of Elder Care 3 cr.
Examines major concepts essential to nursing care of elderly patients in acute or chronic care situations. Concepts of immobility, instability, incontinence and intellectual impairment and nursing challenges engendered by these situations will be given prominence, as will chronicity and quality of life. Nursing interventions having a conservation framework will be discussed. Clinical experiences will be chosen to correspond with the student's chosen topic of care. NSG4320 Nursing Leadership in Health Care Organizations 3 cr.
A survey course introducing students to concepts underlying the management of patient care within health care organizations. Basic organizational and administrative theories are applied to nursing. Application of leadership, change and decision theories in an administrative context will be discussed. Roles of nurses in providing leadership in different organizational formats, assuring and measuring quality of nursing care, determining resource distribution, human resource management and program evaluation are discussed. This course will examine the roles and responsibilities of the primary health care nurse practitioner in enhancing client health and health services. The following will be addressed: historical development, relationships with clients, legal and ethical considerations, scope of practice, relationships with other health care providers, functioning in interdisciplinary teams, primary health care policy formulation, political strategies and role transformation and care of self. This intensive practicum provides students with an opportunity to begin the process of transition from senior student to beginning practitioner. The learner selects an area of practice based on learning and career goals. Emphasis is placed on integration and synthesis of previous knowledge and skills, and on integration of theory and research in practice. This theory and practice course is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and competencies required of a nurse practitioner in managing health and injury using a variety of clinical therapeutic strategies.
