Recently, Kassandra Picard, a member of our university community, showed the kind of awareness and responsibility that keeps our campus safe for everyone.
While leaving Montpetit Hall and heading toward Marchand residence, Kassandra noticed an individual sitting in a position that didn’t seem normal, on the back steps of Marchand. Rather than assuming everything was fine or continuing on her way, she paused, trusted her instincts and acted. She contacted Protection Services to request assistance and ensure the person’s well-being.
This simple yet decisive response reflects a powerful principle: see something, say something. Too often, uncertainty or hesitation prevents us from acting when something feels amiss. In this case, awareness was paired with action—and that made all the difference.
By knowing whom to contact and how to report a concern, Kasandra ensured that trained professionals could respond quickly. Protection Services is equipped to assess situations, provide aid and involve emergency responders if needed. That rapid response can be critical, particularly when a person may be experiencing a medical emergency or distress.
It’s not exaggerating to say that this intervention may have saved a life.
This incident serves as an important reminder to all members of our campus community:
- Stay observant of your surroundings.
- Trust your instincts when something doesn’t seem right.
- Act promptly—don’t assume someone else will.
- Know who to call—Protection Services is always available to help.
Safety is a shared responsibility. While policies, procedures and dedicated teams play an essential role, it’s often individual vigilance—the willingness to notice and act—that makes the greatest immediate impact.
