September 21 will mark the 10th anniversary of the death of Annemarie Desloges, a uOttawa health sciences alumna. Annemarie lost her life in a terrorist attack in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2013. She was 29 years old and was working as a diplomat with Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Marlene Patrick’s (BAdm ’79, BCom ‘80) fondest memories of uOttawa stem from its bilingualism. Arriving at the University from a smaller, English-speaking community and wanting to study translation, she saw this as a great, inclusive opportunity.

As a lawyer and community member, Elysia Petrone-Reitberger (BA ’07, Gee-Gees Women’s Rowing ’04-’07) has dedicated her life to championing environmental protection and Indigenous governance. Her time at uOttawa helped spark her advocacy around both.

Belinda Gilbey (BASc ’14) combined her entrepreneurship and engineering skills to establish BONDI Energy. The company focuses on retrofitting commercial and multi-unit residential buildings with energy efficient heat pumps.

Algae and plants aren’t called “primary producers” for nothing. They’re the base of all food webs, and the sugars and oxygen they produce through photosynthesis are what allow every other organism on this planet to thrive, including us. So, if they go down, we go down with them.

The Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute (OLBI) celebrates the diversity of the French language and of the cultures of the Francophonie with uOttawa alumnus Philippe Falardeau (BSocSc ’89).

Community service has been part of Gwen Madiba’s (MA ’12; BSocSc ’08) life since childhood. Growing up in Libreville, Gabon, Madiba’s mom would come home from working at the hospital with stories of families who couldn’t afford medical services. Her mother would always fight for these people, sometimes paying for their care from her own salary.

Being proudly Francophone and dedicated to bringing Canada’s two official language communities together has been part of uOttawa’s DNA since our inception.
