Biography
Dr. Darryl Davis is a cardiac electrophysiologist and clinician-scientist at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and a Full Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Ottawa. He is Director of Research for the Division of Cardiology, holds a Tier 1 Clinical Research Chair in Translational Cardiovascular Medicine, and directs the Cardiac Translational Research Laboratory at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
His research program develops biological therapies for cardiac arrhythmias and inflammatory cardiovascular disease, bridging fundamental discovery with clinical translation. A major focus of his laboratory is understanding how inflammation and fibrosis create the substrate for atrial fibrillation and developing extracellular vesicle-based therapies that target these underlying disease mechanisms. His laboratory also studies inflammatory cardiomyopathies, including cardiac sarcoidosis, and the molecular mechanisms and potential treatment of cardiac aging.
The program integrates mechanistic studies, human cardiac cell systems, small- and large-animal models, therapeutic manufacturing and clinical translation. Discoveries from this work led to the founding of Rhythm Biotherapeutics Inc., a University of Ottawa Heart Institute spinout developing heart-derived extracellular vesicle therapeutics for atrial fibrillation.
