Biography

Rob McRae was Assistant Secretary to the Cabinet at the Intelligence Assessment Secretariat at the Privy Council Office from 2011 to 2014. Prior to that, he served as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Canada to NATO (2007-2011), Director General of the International Security Bureau (2006-2007), Director General of the Policy Planning Bureau (2003-2006) and Director General of the Central, East, and South Europe Bureau (2002-2003), all in the Department of Foreign Affairs. He has been twice awarded the Foreign Minister’s Award for Foreign Policy Excellence, in 1997 and in 2000. He is the author or editor of several books: Human Security and the New Diplomacy (edited with Don Hubert), Resistance and Revolution: Vaclav Havel’s Czechoslovakia, The Matter with Truth, and Philosophy and the Absolute. He studied at Queen’s University (Honours BA), the University of Toronto (MA), and has a PhD in Political Philosophy from Laval University. He taught at McGill, Queen’s, and Laval before joining the diplomatic service in 1981.
