The University of Ottawa (uOttawa) invites applications for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Neuro AI.

Overview

The successful candidate will hold a full-time tenured or tenure-track position at the uOttawa Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine. The Faculty of Medicine is the first and largest bilingual medical faculty in Canada, consisting of over 2,500 faculty members, including clinicians and researchers.

The successful candidate will be an integral member of uOttawa’s Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, a major hub of clinical and biomedical research at the Faculty. The CMM department boasts approximately 35 full-time biomedical laboratories, with many additional members located in affiliated hospital research institutes, cross-appointed from various clinical and basic science departments, and/or government agencies across the National Capital Region.

Members of CMM have established innovative, multi-disciplinary research programs spanning the fields of regenerative medicine, genomics, cancer biology, bioinformatics, cellular communication, cardiovascular and vascular biology, neuroscience, and developmental biology.

Candidate profile

We are interested in identifying an established neuroscientist who is an internationally recognized leader in their field. The Chair’s mandate will be aligned with the uOttawa goal of redefining health care systems, with the expectation that their focus will include areas and conditions linking the brain and heart.

We seek a computational neuroscientist whose work bridges AI approaches and the study of neural networks, translating cellular and circuit principles into next-generation AI and neuromorphic systems. This may include biophysically grounded neural modeling, spiking network theory, and machine learning. The successful candidate will lead an innovative program connecting theory, large-scale simulation, and experimental collaboration.

The successful candidate will be an integral part of our dynamic and research-intensive environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities and strong support from the University of Ottawa, where artificial intelligence research has been identified as a strategic priority within our 'Digital World' research mandate.

In addition to the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CMM), this environment encompasses the Faculty of Medicine’s clinical departments (e.g., Department of Medicine), as well as the School of Epidemiology and Public Health (SEPH), Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology (BMI), School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (SPS) and the Department of Innovation in Medical Education (DIME).

The candidate will also be a member of the Brain-Heart Interconnectome (BHI). The BHI is a ground-breaking interdisciplinary research program designed to accelerate prevention, detection, treatment, and care of health conditions linked to the brain and the heart through research co-produced with patients and other knowledge users.
