How much funding can I receive?

The scholarship amount is C$1,000 for each term you’re on exchange.

Do I need to apply?

No. If you’re accepted to an exchange abroad, you’re automatically considered.

When will I receive the funding?

If your exchange begins in the fall term:

• funding is credited to your student account in late September

If your exchange begins in the winter term:

• funding is credited to your student account in late January

If your exchange lasts a full academic year:

• funding is credited to your student account once per term (in both the fall and winter terms)

• have been selected by the student exchange program team to receive this scholarship

How much funding can I receive?

The scholarship value is C$750, awarded once per academic year (this means you’ll receive the same amount whether your exchange lasts one term or a full academic year). This amount is subject to change without notice.

When will I receive the funding?

Who is the intended recipient of this scholarship?

University of Ottawa students participating in an exchange at Ashesi University (Ghana) through the student exchange program.

This scholarship is made possible through support from Ashesi Foundation Canada, a key partner helping to invest in the education and skills of young people in Africa and expand international learning opportunities at Ashesi University.

Am I eligible?

To qualify, you must:

• be enrolled at uOttawa
• meet all eligibility requirements for the student exchange program
• be selected to participate in an exchange at Ashesi University
• be officially accepted as an exchange student by Ashesi University

How many scholarships are available?

Two scholarships are awarded each academic year. Each scholarship is awarded to one student for an exchange of either:

• one term
• one academic year

How much funding can I receive? 

The scholarship value is C$10,000 per student, whether the exchange lasts one term or a full academic year.

Of this amount:

• $3,565 goes directly to Ashesi University to cover housing, meals, the student residence permit and fees for the Ghana Card
• the remaining balance is deposited into your uOttawa account once funds become available

Do I need to apply?

No separate application is required. If you’re selected for an exchange at Ashesi University, you’re automatically considered. If you listed Ashesi University as your second or third choice on the exchange application form, you might be asked to submit a letter explaining your interest in studying there.

How are the scholarship recipients selected?

Students who select Ashesi University as their first-choice exchange destination will receive priority for this scholarship.

If scholarships remain available after all first-choice applications have been reviewed, students who selected Ashesi University as their second or third choice might also be considered. These students will need to submit a letter explaining their interest in studying there. The student exchange program team will contact students directly to request this letter.

When will I receive the funding?

Funding is distributed once all exchange requirements have been confirmed and funds become available. A portion of the scholarship goes directly to Ashesi University, and the remaining balance is credited to your uOttawa account.

What conditions must I maintain?

To keep the scholarship throughout your exchange, you must:

• maintain your official acceptance to Ashesi University
• remain eligible for the student exchange program
• meet all academic and administrative requirements from both uOttawa and Ashesi University

Who is the intended recipient of this scholarship?

Am I eligible?

To qualify, you must:

• be a Canadian citizen
• be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at uOttawa, either full time or part time
• be accepted into an international exchange program in China

How much funding can I receive?

The total funding available per year is C$20,000. The exact value of each scholarship per student varies. It’s determined based on the number of recipients selected each year.

The amount you receive doesn’t depend on the length of your exchange.

Erasmus+ funding available in 2027–2028

For the 2027–2028 academic year, two Erasmus+ scholarships are available for Faculty of Arts (Département de français) students participating in an exchange at the University of Mantova (Italy).

What is Erasmus+?

Erasmus+ is a European Union program that supports international learning and mobility opportunities between European institutions and partner countries, including Canada.

How much funding can I receive?

Funding amounts vary depending on:

• the length of your stay
• your host country
• the distance between Canada and your host country

Example

A student completing a five-month exchange in Spain could receive:

• €800 per month for five months
• €820 in travel support

Estimated total funding: €4,820

What does the funding cover?

Funding might help cover:

• travel expenses
• living expenses during your stay abroad

Do I need to apply?

No. No separate application is required.

How is the funding awarded?

The student exchange program team contacts eligible students who have been accepted for an exchange at a partner institution offering Erasmus+ funding.

Who is the intended recipient of this scholarship?

University of Ottawa students participating in a consortium exchange through:

• The Killam Fellowships program
• Ontario Universities International (OUI)

Yes. Depending on your eligibility, you might receive more than one scholarship to support your exchange experience.

Many exchange scholarships are open to international students. Eligibility requirements vary by scholarship, so consult the criteria for each funding opportunity.

No. Participating in the exchange program doesn’t affect the scholarships or bursaries you already receive at uOttawa, provided you continue to meet the eligibility requirements.

No. Exchange students continue to pay tuition fees to uOttawa. They don’t pay tuition fees to the host institution.

If you’re selected for automatically awarded scholarships, the student exchange program team will contact you, or you’ll receive the funding directly in your student account once your eligibility has been confirmed.

Your scholarship eligibility might change if you change your host institution after being selected. Contact the student exchange program team at [email protected] as soon as possible to discuss how your funding might be affected.

Yes. Students participating in consortium exchanges and in receipt of consortium funding may also qualify for the International Experience Student Mobility Scholarship and the Jacques Frémont International Experience Scholarship, subject to eligibility requirements.

If you cancel your exchange or don’t complete it after you receive a scholarship, you’ll no longer be eligible for the funding. The scholarship will be removed from your student account, and you’ll be responsible for repaying any funds already issued.
