I work as a Finance and Administrative Assistant for the CAO.
What degree are you currently pursuing?
I’m currently pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce at the Telfer School of Management at uOttawa, with a specialization in Finance.
What did people in your group do to help you integrate into the group and get you started on the activities assigned to you?
My team has been incredibly supportive. They provided clear guidance, helped me familiarize myself with the tools I’d be using, and ensured I felt comfortable asking questions whenever I needed assistance. This support really helped make the transition smooth.
What are your main responsibilities in your position in Information Technology?
My primary responsibility is to identify missing data and ensure the accuracy of newly entered information. I mainly use Excel databases and other software to verify and manage the data.
What do you like about your job in this work term?
I really appreciate the independence in my role. While I enjoy collaborating with my team, I love having the freedom to take ownership of my tasks and work autonomously when necessary.
What skill sets have you developed since working in Information Technology?
One of the key skills I’ve developed is attention to detail. In this role, ensuring data accuracy is crucial, and I’ve significantly improved my ability to spot inconsistencies and missing information.
Why did you apply for this position in Information Technology?
I applied for this position because I wanted a fresh challenge after working in two other roles through the work-study program. I aimed to diversify my skill set and gain experience in a new environment.
What was your biggest challenge in your first few weeks? How did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge was getting up to speed with the new software tools used in IT. I overcame it by being patient, focusing on the details, and practicing hands-on with the software. The more I used them, the easier it became!
What is it like working in your group in Information Technology?
The group dynamic is fantastic! Everyone is collaborative, approachable, and eager to share their expertise. It makes working on projects enjoyable, and I always feel supported.
Has working in Information Technology changed your career orientation or better defined what you will do once you graduate?
Yes, it has! Working in IT has sparked a greater interest in how technology integrates with business processes, particularly in data management and analysis. It has given me a new perspective on how I can apply my finance background in tech-driven environments.
What emoticon do you find yourself using a lot at work?
I tend to use the smiley face 😊 a lot. It’s a simple way to keep the mood light and positive, especially during team chats!
What did you learn that you expect you can transfer into your next job opportunity?
I’ve learned how to effectively manage and analyze large sets of data, a skill that will be valuable in any future role. Additionally, I’ve developed strong problem-solving and communication abilities that will be essential in any job.
What’s the best part of working in Information Technology?
The best part is the workplace itself. It’s modern and sleek, offering a much more exciting environment compared to other departments I’ve worked in at the university.
How do you find working hybrid? Which do you prefer?
I’m currently working exclusively in person due to my class schedule, limiting me to working up to three days a week. However, having worked in a hybrid setup before, I’d say I prefer it. The flexibility of working from home, combined with in-person collaboration, creates the perfect balance for me.
Did you feel that you are being sufficiently challenged in your job position? If so, how is this being done?
Yes, I do feel challenged in a positive way. The tasks require a high level of attention to detail and problem-solving, which motivates me to continually improve my skills and efficiency. I’m also encouraged to take on more responsibilities as I grow in the role.
Do you feel as though you are using what you have learned so far in your university courses in the workplace?
Absolutely! I’m applying the concepts I’ve learned in my finance courses, particularly in data analysis and financial modeling. It’s been rewarding to see how what I’ve learned in the classroom translates into real-world tasks.
What is one thing you have learned about yourself while working in Information Technology?
I’ve learned that I’m a bit of a perfectionist—and it turns out that’s a strength in this role! My attention to detail helps me catch mistakes and ensure the highest quality of work.
