Mona Nemer - Vice-President, Research
Mona Nemer was appointed Vice-President, Research in 2006.
Mona Nemer is Vice-President, Research at the University of Ottawa, Canada, where she oversees research strategies, infrastructure and commercialization. She is also a professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Director of the Molecular Genetics and Cardiac Regeneration Laboratory. Dr. Nemer’s research interests focus on the heart, particularly on the mechanisms of heart failure and congenital heart diseases.
She has trained nearly 100 students from various countries. Her work, which has been published in over 150 articles in prestigious scientific journals, has contributed to the development of diagnostic tests for heart failure and the genetics of cardiac birth defects.
She has served on several national and international advisory committees and executive boards. She currently chairs the France-Canada Research Fund and serves on the international scientific board of the Lefoulon-Delalande Foundation of the Institut de France. Dr. Nemer is a member of several boards, including the Stem Cell Network, the Medical Devices Commercialization Centre and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Dr. Nemer’s accomplishments have been recognized nationally and internationally. She is a fellow of the Academy of Sciences of the Royal Society of Canada, a Member of the Order of Canada, a Knight of the Order of Québec and a Knight of the Order of Merit of the French Republic. She has also been awarded honorary doctorates from France and Finland.
The Vice-President, Research establishes priorities, policies and practices that attract and retain outstanding researchers at the University of Ottawa. The Vice-President, Research also works with industry partners, government leaders, granting councils and other research institutions to create a dynamic and stimulating environment for research in Canada for the benefit of Canadian society.
The Vice-President, Research oversees the broad portfolio of programs including international research, technology transfer and business enterprise, research grants and ethics, animal care services, radiation and biosafety, research centres and institutes, government research infrastructure programs and research communications.
The Vice-President, Research works in partnership with stakeholders in the affiliated hospital research institutes to advance research and innovation.
