The Office of Public Policy Research and Outreach (OPPRO) helps the University of Ottawa develop effective solutions to complex policy challenges and inform public policy in Canada and around the world.

Mission

The OPPRO’s mission is to:

  • Support uOttawa researchers, research centres and institutes in their relationships with all levels of government to help shape and strengthen public policy.
  • Promote the University of Ottawa as a trusted voice on broad public policy issues to senior thought leaders, policy-makers and influencers in government.
  • Develop research and training initiatives that support the development of evidence-based public policy in Canada.
  • Evaluate the impact of uOttawa’s public policy research to better inform and transform policy for the benefit of society.

Collaborative International Series on Innovation in Housing and Homelessness

The Collaborative International Series will bring world-leading researchers to Ottawa and connect international and Canadian evidence with local action on pressing challenges. The inaugural visit June 9, 10 and 11 will feature Dr. Ligia Teixeira of the Centre for Homelessness Impact (London, U.K.), an expert in test-and-learn approaches to effective homelessness interventions.

Alex Trebek Forum for Dialogue Professorship on Public Policy

An initiative born of the collaboration between the Office of Public Policy Research and Outreach (OPPRO) and the Alex Trebek Forum for Dialogue (ATFD). The Professorship will rely on the expertise of University of Ottawa researchers to promote academic knowledge and research on the design and implementation of public policies.

Call for Proposals Scholarly Events and Outreach Activities

University of Ottawa tenure-track or tenured professors are invited to apply for up to $10,000 in funding to host scholarly events or outreach activities that promote public dialogue on key policy issues.

Knowledge Mobilization Grants — uOttawa Research Centres and Institutes

These grants aim to amplify the impact of research on knowledge users and their involvement throughout the research and knowledge mobilization (KMb) process.

Research and Public Policy Brown Bag Lunch Series

The Research and Public Policy Brown Bag Lunch Series, organized by the OPPRO, provides a platform for researchers to engage in informal discussions with government officials, enhancing the impact of academic research on public policy. Through sessions featuring experts, the series explores effective strategies for researchers to advise and collaborate with government representatives.

Mathieu Fleury

Expert Adviser in Housing Innovation: Mathieu Fleury

Mathieu Fleury brings over a decade of experience as a municipal leader, having served as Ottawa City Councillor for the Rideau-Vanier Ward and as Chair of the Ottawa Community Housing Board. In these roles, he championed affordable housing, community development, and inclusive urban policy.

A close collaborator of the Office of Public Policy Research and Outreach, Mathieu Fleury serves as Expert Adviser in Housing Innovation at the University of Ottawa. Funded by the Alex Trebek Forum for Dialogue, his work focuses on accelerating the construction of social housing on public land by simplifying intergovernmental processes and fostering collaboration between researchers, policymakers, and community stakeholders. He is also a member of the uOttawa Pop-up Lab on Housing and Homelessness.

Through applied research, stakeholder engagement, and policy innovation, Fleury is helping to address Canada's housing crisis with practical, scalable solutions
