Since 2012, the therapy dog program has provided students with a weekly opportunity to take care of their mental health and well-being by interacting with canine companions. Originally launched as a pilot project, the program has grown into a regular wellness activity that’s a popular feature in campus life.
The program is the result of a collaboration with Ottawa Therapy Dogs and other local community organizations. Through this partnership, certified therapy dogs and trained handlers are invited on campus as part of a broader strategy to provide students stress relief and emotional support.
Therapy dog sessions in our wellness lounges creates a safe, calm space where students can take a break from academic demands and enjoy positive interactions with animals.
Research has shown that contact with therapy animals may help lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety and improve overall mood. On campus, students often describe the sessions as a great way to manage stress and get through emotionally challenging times. On average, around 30 students attend per week, and they’re divided into small groups, keeping things comfortable and allowing everyone in attendance to get lots of dog cuddles.
Beware: the cuteness factor is irresistible.
Our therapy dogs have missed you! The first session of the fall term will take place on September 18 at the UCU Wellness Lounge from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
Check the therapy dog session schedule and get to know the therapy dogs and their handlers.
Psst! For students living in residence: we host special sessions in our 90U Wellness lounge exclusively for you – students living in any residence are welcome to attend.
