Remi Royer, an undergraduate Economics student at the University of Ottawa, has coauthored a new research report examining the deterioration of Canada’s youth labour market.

Coauthored with Stephen Tapp, CEO and Chief Economist of the Centre for the Study of Living Standards (CSLS), the September 2026 report, The Weakest Link: Diagnosing the Deterioration of the Youth Labour Market in Canada, examines the challenges facing young Canadians entering the workforce.

The authors document a significant deterioration in youth employment in recent years, finding that the trend has been driven primarily by very weak hiring activity, rather than increased layoffs. The report explores the factors contributing to this decline and its potential implications for young people’s employment prospects.

Royer’s contribution highlights the opportunities for University of Ottawa students to engage in research addressing important economic and social issues.
