“I was surprised and excited when I got the news! It was a very thorough process to apply. I got my friends, profs, and mentors to help guide me on how I was going to respond to the essay questions, and it was very humbling learning from others and what they see you bring to an environment. What they perceive as my strengths and areas of opportunities where I can take my skills in the future. The application process itself was an experience. I got to meet so many great people, I learned a lot about myself, and it reinforced my belief of wanting to pursue law even more! I can’t wait for the next few years to come!” Tim Gulliver
Tim has been very involved in the Faculty of Social Sciences during his studies at the University of Ottawa. He developed his leadership skills as the elected student union president and as part of the House of Commons program. He worked to improve conflict resolution, financial accountability and how to be an advocate for the students. His extracurricular activities, beyond the classroom, help him differentiate himself from the other applicants. “uOttawa has given me so many opportunities in and outside of the classroom,” Tim said.
Tim underwent a rigorous seven-month selection process. Each scholar was chosen based on their character, community engagement, leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, academic strength, and intellectual curiosity. Designed to encourage purposeful leadership, the scholarships are the result of a landmark $200 million gift in 2019 by John and Marcy McCall MacBain, the second-largest donation in Canadian history. The scholarship covers all tuition and fees for an eligible program and a monthly living stipend of $2,000 for academic terms, mentorship, coaching, and a leadership program.
