For those planning on staying in Ottawa for the summer, here’s a selection of things to do to make the most of the weather and this historic city.
  1. Bluesfest

Line dance, head bang or rock out — from July 6 to July 16, Shania Twain, Pitbull, Weezer and the Foo Fighters will perform at LeBreton Flats Park, just a 10-minute O-Train ride from campus! This historical festival is right in Ottawa’s backyard and will be something to remember.

  1. Part-time work

Go to uoZone and look for the JobsNow section. Explore the possibilities for part- and full-time summer jobs with businesses around Ottawa. The University also has postings for jobs on campus for students to work close to home (especially useful if you’re taking summer classes).

  1. Outdoor activities

Just minutes away from many parks and trails, Ottawa is perfect for that weekend warrior in everybody. Many trails are near the city or just across the river in Gatineau.

  1. Escapade Music Festival

This annual festival is the highlight of the rave scene in Ottawa. People come from all over to attend and tickets sell out fast. With headliners such as Kygo and Marshmello, this year’s event will be epic.

  1. Museums

Canada’s capital has the best museums in the country, with fascinating exhibits. From Our Land, Our Art (with Indigenous artists from Nunavik) at the Museum of Nature to the Liberation! Canada and the Netherlands 1944-1945 exhibit at the Canadian War Museum, the learning never stops.

  1. Galleries

Art imitates life, and life in Ottawa is captured perfectly by Wilfrid Flood. Don’t miss his exhibit at the Ottawa Art Gallery, along with other national treasures. And don’t forget the renowned National Gallery, which will be hosting exhibitions such as Uninvited: Canadian Women Artists in the Modern Moment.

  1. Food festivals

Take advantage of places like the Byward Market and the Ottawa Farmer’s Market at Lansdowne for tasty treats and fresh produce. Food festivals take place all over the city all summer long and include diverse products at great prices!

  1. Canal and Dow’s Lake boat rentals

Check out the many boat rentals on the Rideau Canal and Dow’s Lake. Paddle a canoe or kayak up and down the historic canal, or, if a tour is more your speed, take one of the many boat tours that will show you around Ottawa from the canal.

  1. Pop-up markets

Along with the Byward Market and Lansdowne, there’s a wide range of pop-up and flea markets. Check out everything from used clothing to antique furniture and find that diamond in the rough.

  1. Watch the Ottawa Redblacks

Support the home team during the summer with cheap game tickets at Lansdowne. Come out for an afternoon and enjoy some Canadian football in an open-air stadium.
