“It will not be the last attack as Trump is using all legal (sadly this one will be upheld by the US courts even if not fully compliant with CUSMA) and illegal ones that may come in the future. Canada should match his bully transactional trade negotiations with potential threats on our own potential trade limits to what the US needs most from Canada, namely, critical minerals and uranium production partnerships and exports, electricity exports, diverting oil exports from the US to Asia and key agricultural resources such as fertilizer. We can publicly state these key Canadian resources will flow to Europe, Asia and the Global South instead of the US until the bullying trade tactics stop. Not standing up to bullies only gives them more incentive to escalate their attacks on Canada.”
