Biography

Andrew E. Cleland is asenior staff lawyer at Ecojustice and director of the uOttawa-Ecojustice Environmental Law Clinic

As a bilingual civil litigator licensed in Ontario and Quebec, Andrew has over 13 years of experience in complex litigation before administrative tribunals and all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada. His experience spans civil liability, class actions, human rights, constitutional law, consumer protection, employment law, transnational corporate accountability, and environmental law.

After studying law at McGill University, Andrew began his career in 2012 at a Quebec law firm specializing in class action and public interest litigation. In 2018, he started his own practice to assist underrepresented people to navigate the legal system. In 2022, he co-founded Delangie Cleland Limoges s.e.n.c., a civil litigation law firm focused on human rights, employment law, housing law, class actions, and strategic advocacy. 

Andrew has advised civil society organizations on climate change litigation, ending fossil fuel subsidies, and mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence legislation. He has also worked with communities on developing legal strategies to hold Canadian businesses responsible for environmental contamination caused by their overseas operations. In 2026, he joined Ecojustice as a senior staff lawyer on their nature team.

An experienced supervising lawyer, Andrew has mentored law students at the McGill Food and Agriculture Law Clinic and the PINAY legal information clinic. He is a member of the board of Canadian Lawyers for International Human Rights. He holds a B.C.L./LL.B from McGill's Faculty of Law and a B.A. in English Literature, Classics, and Philosophy from McGill's Faculty of Arts. His early career included work with the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Canada's Permanent Mission to the UN Human Rights Council.
