Biography

In the academic year 2022-2023, Ton Zuijdwijk will teach the course in European Union Law, in the January term of 2023. 

Ton Zuijdwijk is a former General Counsel in the Trade Law Bureau of Global Affairs Canada (and the Department of Justice). In that capacity, he provided legal advice on the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreements and Canada’s Free Trade Agreements, participated in international trade negotiations and litigated cases before WTO Panels and the WTO Appellate Body.  Before the establishment of the Trade Law Bureau, he practised constitutional and international law as a member of the Department of Justice. 

Before joining the Department of Justice of Canada, Ton taught law at the University of Leiden (Netherlands) and at McGill University.  He also served in the Office of Legal Affairs of the United Nations (International Trade Law Branch) in New York and the Transfer of Technology Division of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva.
