Justice Juliana Martel was called to the Ontario bar in 2008, after completing the National Program at University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law. She articled with a bilingual law firm in Ottawa prior to joining the Ministry of the Attorney General, where she has been working as an assistant Crown attorney for the past 16 years. In that time, Justice Martel prosecuted complex cases in both official languages, including sexual violence, homicides, child abuse and guns and gangs prosecutions. She also regularly appeared before the Ontario Review Board as Crown counsel. In addition, Justice Martel served as a mentor with the province wide Crown Mentorship Program, the Sexual Violence Mentorship Program and the University of Ottawa’s Criminal Law Courthouse Mentorship Program.
Justice Martel is a devoted volunteer in her community. She has been extensively involved in youth minor hockey, recently holding the position of director of competitive hockey in her district, and has co-led a diversity and inclusion initiative with various partners under Hockey Eastern Ontario. Justice Martel has also been an involved parent with her children’s school council including roles as president and vice-president. During that time, she held meetings and championed several initiatives including adopting safeguards for virtual learning and bullying.
