The Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism has honoured outstanding volunteer Gilles LeVasseur, LLB ’93, LLL ’84, B.Adm ’81, B.Sc.Soc ’87, with the Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship.

The medal represents the second highest honour awarded by the province and recognizes individuals whose exceptional volunteerism has helped drive positive change and made a lasting impact in their communities and across the province.

J.L. Gilles LeVasseur is professor of management and law at the University of Ottawa. He has  an impressive portfolio of achievements in a wide range of fields in both private and public sectors. He has also served as an officer in the Office of the Judge Advocate General of the Canadian Armed Forces, with previous experience as a finance officer in the Logistics Branch.

For over 25 years, he has worked tirelessly to improve his community’s well-being. He gave a voice to hearing-impaired French speakers in Ontario. He raised funds to support people in palliative care and obtained medical services for veterans. For children with disabilities, he teamed up with the Blue Jays Care Foundation to give these kids the joy of playing baseball. At  Hôpital Montfort, he offered legal counsel pro bono on ethics issues and rights of patients.

Those awarded with the Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship have devoted their lives to causes such as protecting Ontario’s natural heritage; promoting the arts, culture and sports; advocating for safer communities; and, assisting those in need.

Congratulations Gilles!
