Based at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA, Professor Meier has over two decades of experience in collaborative research, interdisciplinary teaching, and policy analysis at the intersection of international law and global health.
Professor Meier’s Fulbright fellowship at the University of Ottawa will focus on advancing the field of global health law as a foundation of public health promotion and human rights realization. Central to this academic exchange, Professor Meier will undertake research to assess the development and impact of the 1986 Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, additionally supporting CHLPE in marking the 40th anniversary of the groundbreaking charter through an October 20-21 conference.
Beyond work on the Ottawa Charter, Professor Meier will use his time at the University of Ottawa to finalize the second edition of his textbook Foundations of Global Health & Human Rights (Oxford 2027) as well as frame the academic research on the second edition of his Global Health Law & Policy (2030).
Professor Meier will also use this academic exchange to give a series of lectures across Canada on contemporary challenges facing global health governance, extending longstanding collaborations. “It has been a privilege to support efforts to advance global health law in Canada over the years, collaborating with scholars in the Global Health Law Consortium at the University of Toronto, York University, and the University of Ottawa,” says Professor Meier. “The Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Health Law, Policy and Ethics will extend these efforts. Canada has long been central to global health governance and I look forward to establishing lasting collaborations to advance global health law with Canadian scholars and policymakers in the years to come.”
Professor Meier is a consultant to international organizations, national governments, and nongovernmental organizations, and serves as the Founding Chair of the Human Rights Forum of the American Public Health Association and the Inaugural Chair of the Global Health Law Consortium. His engaged scholarship has led to three foundational Oxford University Press volumes, a quarterly column on Global Health Law in the Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics, and over 150 interdisciplinary research articles.
