The Civil Law Section is breaking new ground by being the first Canadian university to offer a scholarship allowing students to take courses at the prestigious Hague Academy of International Law.

On November 2, 2023, a major agreement was signed between the Civil Law Section and The Hague Academy of International Law, during the visit of the academy’s secretary-general, Jean-Marc Thouvenin.

The secretary-general said that the creation of this scholarship represented a “wonderful act that will allow beneficiaries to deepen their knowledge of international law and to ‘meet the international community,’ over 300 auditors from over a hundred countries, where the well-known ‘spirit of The Hague’ has illuminated the Peace Palace since the beginning of the last century.”

Under this agreement, Civil Law Section students will receive  2,200 euro scholarships to take summer courses at the Academy of International Law.  Each year, one recipient will have the opportunity to take a general course in international law as well as a series of courses dealing with specific issues in the news. Courses take place within the Peace Palace precinct, the prestigious headquarters of the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

This will be an unforgettable experience for participants, who will find themselves immersed in an environment favouring exchanges with internationally-renowned experts, ICJ judges and other students from over a hundred countries. This scholarship will allow students to develop specialized, topical skills in international law, while using the experience to build their networks.

“I congratulate the University of Ottawa on this wonderful initiative. This lovely gesture will motivate us at The Hague to continue tirelessly to offer the best possible experience to the University of Ottawa’s most promising young jurists. The future is theirs,” said Thouvenin.
