Biography

Dr. Luc Mertens is an internationally recognized Pediatric Cardiologist and Echocardiography expert. He earned his medical degree and PhD in Molecular Biology and Physiology from the University of Leuven in Belgium, where he also completed his residency in Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology, including a year of training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

In 2008, Dr. Mertens was recruited as Director of Echocardiography at SickKids in Toronto, and in 2013, he was promoted to Full Professor at the University of Toronto. He currently serves as Division Chief of Cardiology at CHEO and as Medical Director of the Cardiovascular Program across CHEO and SickKids.

Beyond his clinical expertise, Dr. Mertens has a strong interest in leadership and healthcare management, having completed a Master’s in Hospital Management for Physicians at the University of Leuven. His research focuses on developing and validating advanced echocardiographic techniques to assess cardiac function in children. He has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications, serves on editorial boards of several journals, and is an editor of a leading textbook in pediatric and congenital echocardiography.
