Biography

Dr. Schmidt-Braekling is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty. Raised in Germany, Spain, Portugal, and the United States, he completed his medical degree at the University of Münster, Germany, followed by an orthopaedic residency at St. Franziskus Hospital in Münster. In 2012, he was appointed as a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon at University Hospital Münster, Germany. In 2013, he completed a one-year research fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

In 2015, Dr. Schmidt-Braekling returned to University Hospital Münster, where he was appointed as Staff in the Department of Orthopaedics at a Level I arthroplasty center with national referral status for periprosthetic joint infections. In 2019, he was appointed Medical Director of the Arthroplasty Center. In 2020, he was introduced to the Department of Orthopaedics in Ottawa through a research scholarship, and returned in 2022 to complete a clinical fellowship. In 2022, he was also appointed Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Münster, Germany.

In September 2024, Dr. Schmidt-Braekling began working as a Staff Orthopaedic Surgeon on the Periprosthetic Joint Infection (PJI) Team in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at The Ottawa Hospital.
