Biography
Dr. Vimoj J. Nair, MBBS, MD, MSc, FRCPC, is an Associate Professor in the Division of Radiation Oncology at the University of Ottawa and a Clinician Investigator in the Cancer Research Program at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI). He also holds consulting privileges at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) and serves as Vice Chair of the Ontario Cancer Research Ethics Board (OCREB).
Following his radiation oncology residency in India, Dr. Nair completed a neuro-oncology fellowship at the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, and advanced brachytherapy fellowship training through the American Brachytherapy Society (ABS). He then completed a two-year fellowship in CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery and Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) at the University of Ottawa and obtained Fellowship certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC). He holds a Master's degree (MSc) in Clinical Trials from the University of London, UK, and a Professional Diploma in Clinical Research (PDCR). Prior to joining the University of Ottawa, he served as a staff radiation oncologist at the Prince Edward Island Cancer Treatment Centre and as an Assistant Professor at Dalhousie University, Halifax.
Dr. Nair's clinical practice encompasses adult neuro-oncology, adult hematological malignancies, adult gastrointestinal and hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) cancers, and the full spectrum of pediatric oncology, with a focus on stereotactic radiotherapy (SRS/SBRT) and precision radiation medicine. His research focuses on radiation-induced neurotoxicity, including translational work with animal models; stereotactic radiosurgery for malignant conditions, along with functional radiosurgery and SRS for benign conditions; radiation in hematological malignancies, including radiation-based conditioning for transplantation in malignant and benign conditions; late effects of radiation; and applications of artificial intelligence and virtual reality in radiation oncology.
He is a member of the Canadian Cancer Clinical Trials Group (CCTG) CNS/Brain Disease Site Committee and has contributed to national and international oncology guidelines in adult and pediatric cancers. An invited speaker at radiation oncology and neuro-oncology conferences across North America, Europe, and Asia, he has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and scientific abstracts and has been a recipient of the Divisional Best Teacher Award. He is actively engaged in the mentorship of medical students, residents, fellows, and research trainees, and in outreach and knowledge translation initiatives supporting cancer education and equitable access to oncology care, including teaching trainees in the developing world.
Dr. Nair serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Association of Radiation Oncology (CARO) Cureus Journal and is a member of the editorial boards of several international academic journals.
