What if you walked in your grandfather’s footsteps 60 years later?

That’s exactly what Dr. Camée L’Espérance, a 2024 graduate of the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine, did by pursuing a career in medicine inspired by the passion of her grandfather, Dr. Normand Tremblay, who also graduated from the Faculty... in 1965!

“His determination, his desire to help others, his constant thirst for learning and his enthusiasm gave me the itch for medicine.”

— Granddaughter of Normand Tremblay (MD1965)

Today Dr. L’Espérance is doing her residency in family medicine, with the goal of providing empathetic, patient-centred care—reflecting the values passed down from her grandfather. Now retired after a devoted career as an anesthesiologist, Dr. Tremblay never misses a chance to share heartfelt words of encouragement with his granddaughter.

Normand Tremblay’s passion for medicine didn’t just inspire his granddaughter — it also led to a lasting commitment to future generations. In 2005, as they celebrated their 40th reunion, members of the University of Ottawa’s MD Class of 1965 established the Meds' 65 Student Bursary, a fund designed to support medical students. Since its creation, the bursary has helped more than 15 students in the MD program and continues to make a meaningful impact today.
