How do I publish from my thesis? Demystifying Academic Publication
Oct 2, 2025 — 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
In this session, we will explore the opportunities and challenges of turning PhD research into peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters or a book. Using the fields of migration and citizenship studies as our case study we will work through the steps involved and the written and unwritten rules of this process.
Details
This includes identifying the right journal or publisher, tailoring the manuscript, managing peer review, and handling revisions and rejections. We will also discuss best practice for when you are asked to be a peer reviewer, that is, what to keep in mind when you are asked to assess the work of fellow scholars in this essential role that sustains academic rigour and community.
Visiting researcher Professor Leah Bassel, Coventry University, UK, will draw on her longstanding experience as a member of the editorial team of the journal Citizenship Studies, where she will take on the role of co-Chief Editor in January 2026.
This interactive professional development seminar will be held in English and French. We expect participants to be passively bilingual in those languages: everyone can contribute in the language of their preference, the speakers will switch languages but not every piece of information may be repeated in the other language. PhD students and Early Career Researchers in the social sciences are particularly welcome!
Organizer: Professor Elke Winter, Graduate Program Director (PhD Sociology) at the School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies.
Event funded by the Visiting Researcher Program, Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (OVPRI)
