Social Welfare in the MENA Region: Challenges and Future

The MENA region has been grappling with a range of challenges that have been further intensified by ongoing crises, political instability, wars, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The recent Ukrainian-Russian war has further complicated an already complex situation. These factors present significant challenges for social welfare policies across the region.
This event aims to delve into the current state of social welfare in the MENA region, exploring the impact of these multiple crises on the provision of social services, the development of social welfare systems, and the overall welfare of individuals and communities. Through a critical examination of existing policies and practices, the lecture will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of current social welfare systems and their ability to respond to new and emerging challenges. The lecture will also present future prospects for social welfare in the MENA region, including potential policy solutions and recommendations for improving the delivery and effectiveness of social welfare programs. Ultimately, the event will provide valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities for social welfare in the MENA region, highlighting the importance of continued research and dialogue to address these critical issues.

Speaker: Dr. Anis Ben Brik – Associate Professor, Founding Director of Program for Social Policy and Program Evaluation (PROSPER), College of Public Policy, Hamad Bin Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar
Dr. Anis Ben Brik is an associate professor at the College of Public Policy (CPP) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar, where he teaches courses on social policy and program evaluation. He is a leading expert in the field of social policy and evaluation research in the MENA region, with a particular focus on family policy, child welfare, disability, social protection, and gender equality. Dr. Ben Brik has held several distinguished roles throughout his academic and professional career, including founding director of the CPP’s Program of Social Policy and Evaluation Research (PROSPER). He has extensive experience in public sector, UN, and NGO settings. Dr. Anis has served as a senior policy advisor, member of national committees, advisory boards, and director of research and evaluation projects in various countries, including Qatar and the UAE. He is also the Middle East regional organizing partner at the United Nations NGO Major Group. Dr. Ben Brik holds a PhD in Social Sciences from the University College London and a Master's degree in Public Policy from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
