Workshop: Hailing “Skill” and Broken Promises: (Im)Migration in Polarizing Societies in Europe and North America
Sep 25, 2025 to Sep 26, 2025 — 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
In a global context marked by growing inequality and social polarization, this interdisciplinary workshop invites critical reflection on the political and societal implications of the “skilled immigrant” narrative.
Details
Bringing together scholars from Europe and North America, the event explores the promises associated with this discourse: what are the stakes for migrants? What risks and tensions does it generate — and for whom? How is it experienced, resisted, or challenged?
Over the course of two days, participants will engage with these questions through case studies, critical analyses, and open discussions, aiming to shed light on how immigration policies intersect with broader questions of race, class, and citizenship in polarizing societies.
This event is organized by Elke Winter, Leah Bassel (CU-UK) and Milena Chimienti (HETS-Geneva).
This event is funded through a SSHRC Connection Grant and supported by the University of Ottawa.
