Nathan Young
The University of Ottawa is pleased to announce that Nathan Young has officially been confirmed as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences following his term as Interim Dean.

A Full Professor in the School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies, Professor Young is widely recognized for his leadership, collaborative approach and commitment to interdisciplinary research and public engagement. His research explores environmental sociology, climate change policy, natural resource management and the integration of diverse knowledge systems in decision-making. 

Since stepping into the interim role, Professor Young has worked closely with faculty members, staff and students to support the Faculty’s mission and strengthen its impact within the university and broader community. His leadership has emphasized dialogue, innovation, bilingualism, reconciliation and community engagement while fostering an environment where diverse perspectives and academic excellence can thrive. 

Professor Young has also highlighted the importance of strengthening the Faculty’s connections with the Franco-Ontarian community and reaffirmed his commitment to la Francophonie as a central pillar of the Faculty’s identity. His vision reflects the University of Ottawa’s unique bilingual character and the Faculty’s ongoing commitment to promoting French-language teaching, research and community engagement.

Under his leadership, the Faculty of Social Sciences continues to advance socially engaged teaching and research that addresses some of today’s most pressing societal challenges. Located in Canada’s capital, the Faculty remains committed to shaping the society of tomorrow through critical thinking, interdisciplinarity, inclusion and social innovation.

Professor Young has previously served in several leadership roles within the Faculty, including Director of the School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies and Vice-Dean of Governance and Internationalization. His longstanding dedication to the University community and vision for the future of the Faculty have earned the respect and confidence of colleagues across the institution.
