Regulating Artificial Intelligence

The AI + Society Initiative and the Law Commission of Ontariopresent, in collaboration with the University of Ottawa Research Centre for Law, Technology and Society:

A year ago, the Government of Canada enacted the Directive on Automated Decision-Making, the most significant initiative to directly regulate AI and ADM in Canada to date. A few days ago, the Government of Ontario launched a new consultation for “Ontario’s first responsible AI framework”. Yet, a lot has to be done in Canada to comprehensively regulate AI systems, both in the private and public sectors. In contrast, on April 21, 2021, European Commission proposed a new Regulation laying down harmonised rules on artificial intelligence to create a risk-based legal framework for AI systems in the European Union.

How can we regulate AI systems to protect human rights and due process while promoting innovation? Our experts will decrypt the current regulatory initiatives in Canada and the EU, and will discuss what could be next for Canada.

The conversation will draw from the recent report “Regulating AI” published by the Law Commission of Ontario as well as Artificial Intelligence and the Law in Canada (LexisNexis, 2021), a new collection edited by Florian Martin-Bariteau and Teresa Scassa.

About the Speakers

Dr. Céline Castets-Renard is the University Research Chair on Accountable Artificial Intelligence in a Global World at the University of Ottawa, where she is a Full Professor in the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section, and a Faculty member of the Centre for Law, Technology and Society. She also holds the Chair “Law, Accountability and Social Trust in AI” at ANITI (3IA Artificial and Natural Intelligence Toulouse Institute).

Dr. Teresa Scassais the Canada Research Chair in Information Law and Policy at the University of Ottawa, where she is a Full Professor in the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section, and a Faculty member of the University of Ottawa Centre for Law, Technology and Society.

Aneurin (Nye) Thomas is the Executive Director of the Law Commission of Ontario.

Dr. Florian Martin-Bariteau is the University of Ottawa Research Chair in Technology and Society and an Associate Professor of Law at the University of Ottawa, where he notably leads the university’s Centre for Law, Technology and Society, as well as the AI + Society Initiative.
