HRREC student member Slava Balan was awarded the Nicole Senécal Scholarship for the academic year 2019-2020. The scholarship is awarded to a Ph.D. student who demonstrates academic excellence and who plans to conduct a field research in a developing country in the area of good governance.

The Nicole Senécal Graduate Scholarship in International Law was set up in 2006 by Nicole Senécal on the 40th anniversary of her graduation from the LL.L. program at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law. Ms. Senécal also holds a Diplôme d’études supérieures in public international law from the University of Nice, in France. She was admitted to the Barreau du Québec in 1967. During her long career in the Canadian public service, Ms. Senécal held important positions in foreign affairs, international cooperation, communications and public management. Until recently she was a board member of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, the World Vegetable Center in Taiwan and Vice-Present of the Friends of Library and Archives Canada. She is currently an external member of CIDA Audit Committee.
