The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)’s AI Ethics Experts Without Borders (AIEB) network is a global initiative designed to support member states in implementing UNESCO’s Recommendation on the ethics of AI. Bringing together leading experts from more than 50 countries, the network provides policy guidance, legislative advice and capacity building tailored to national needs. The network notably supports the development of policies and regulatory tools, the implementation of tools such as the UNESCO’s “AI Readiness Assessment Methodology” and “Ethical Impact Assessment”, as well as providing training to governments, regulators, civil society and the private sector.
Dr. Thomas Hervé Mboa Nkoudou is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication of the Faculty of Arts and a Faculty member at the Centre for Law, Technology and Society at the University of Ottawa. His research adopts a decolonial and critical perspective on development, focusing on digital humanities, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, digital technologies, and particularly AI for the common good. His work is grounded in a commitment to epistemic diversity, digital sovereignty, and context-sensitive approaches to responsible innovation.
He will contribute his perspective on inclusive and context-sensitive approaches to AI governance to the UNESCO network, supporting the UN's efforts to help countries translate global ethical principles into locally adapted policies and practices.
