Dr. Frederic St-Denis-Bissonnette Awarded Prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to Advance EV Biotech Commercialization at MIT

BioThera Solutions
Dr. Frederic St-Denis-Bissonnette, founder of BioThera Solutions, has been named a 2025–2026 Canada Fulbright Short-Term Entrepreneurship Award recipient — a distinction built on years of rigorous scientific research and an entrepreneurial journey that took root right here at the University of Ottawa’s eHub.

The award, sponsored by the Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States of America (Fulbright Canada), recognizes outstanding innovators who demonstrate both exceptional scientific promise and the entrepreneurial vision to bring their work to market.

As a Fulbright Student, Dr. St-Denis-Bissonnette will spend four weeks at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in April 2026. At MIT, he will work on advancing commercialization pathways for BioThera Solutions’ extracellular vesicle (EV/exosome) platform, including regulatory positioning, manufacturing strategy, and U.S. market entry. He joins a distinguished global network of Fulbright alumni — leaders, researchers, and innovators united by a commitment to advancing knowledge and fostering understanding across borders.

The research behind his venture, BioThera Solutions, sits at a compelling frontier in medicine. Extracellular vesicles (a.k.a. exosomes) are tiny biological particles naturally secreted by cells, and they hold significant promise as the next-generation therapeutics in regenerative medicine and targeted drug delivery. Dr. St-Denis-Bissonnette’s doctoral research at the University of Ottawa focused on developing these products to the rigorous quality and safety standards required for clinical use in oncology, bridging cutting-edge science with the regulatory and manufacturing realities of real-world medicine. BioThera Solutions is focused on making EVs manufacturable, scalable, and clinically viable, taking a patient-centric approach.

Being selected for the Fulbright award is a recognition not just of scientific excellence, but of entrepreneurial maturity, the ability to see a path from discovery to impact. It reflects how far Dr. St-Denis-Bissonnette has come since first developing his idea and speaks to the strength of the ecosystem that helped shape him as a founder.

Where It All Began: The eHub’s Startup Garage

The road to the Fulbright began with years of research at the University of Ottawa. Dr. St-Denis-Bissonnette’s path as an entrepreneur was shaped significantly by his participation in two programs at the eHub’s Startup Garage, programs designed to take researchers with strong ideas and give them the tools to build something real.

Dr. St-Denis-Bissonnette first came to the eHub through the RevUp Circuit, an intensive entrepreneurship bootcamp. He arrived with an early-stage concept for clinical-grade EV and exosome products and, through the program’s structured mentorship, peer community, and hands-on workshops, developed it into a commercially grounded business idea. The RevUp Circuit challenged him to pressure-test his assumptions, articulate his value proposition, and begin thinking strategically about the path from lab to market.

Building on that momentum, he was accepted into the Exploration Circuit, where he received tailored, one-on-one support to deepen BioThera Solutions’ market positioning, refine its go-to-market strategy, and accelerate its growth. The program’s personalized approach helped transform a research-driven idea into a venture with genuine commercial potential and positioned Dr. St-Denis-Bissonnette to pursue opportunities well beyond the University’s walls. The momentum culminated at our annual Rally Day showcase, where BioThera took home first place in the pitch competition, a fitting validation that the business was truly on the right track.

The eHub and the University of Ottawa are proud to celebrate Frederic’s achievement. His journey is a powerful reminder of what becomes possible when world-class research meets structured entrepreneurial support — and of uOttawa’s commitment to nurturing innovators who go on to make an impact on the world stage.

Dr. Frederic St-Denis-Bissonnette
The future of medicine will be driven by biologically intelligent systems. Extracellular vesicles are one of the most promising, and underbuilt, platforms today. BioThera is building the science and infrastructure to make that future real.
