The University of Ottawa’s Vulnerability, Trauma, Resilience and Culture Research Laboratory (V-TRaC) is bringing together researchers, practitioners, and community leaders for a three-day conference exploring the state of mental health care for Black Canadians.

Jude Mary Cénat, Associate Professor of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences, is leading the first conference of its kind in Canada, which will unite over 200 guests from across the country to tackle subjects surrounding the social determinants of Black mental health.

“This conference is an opportunity to exchange ideas in hopes of changing the paradigm in research, diagnosis, care and prevention programs, and in strategies for Black mental health care.”

“What still needs to be understood in 2022 is that Canada’s approach to mental health care remains built on a colorblind approach,” says Professor Cénat, who is director of the V-TRaC lab. “This conference is an opportunity to exchange ideas in hopes of changing the paradigm in research, diagnosis, care and prevention programs, and in strategies for Black mental health care.”

Professor Cénat is the force behind the Interdisciplinary Centre for Black Health (ICBH), Canada’s first academic research centre dedicated to studying the health of Black communities.
