Sylvain Hupé, Interim Chief Information Security Officer
Meet Sylvain - Interim Chief Information Security Officer

What was your last career change?

More recently, I assumed the role of Interim Chief Information Security Officer, expanding my responsibilities from operational security leadership into institutional‑level cybersecurity strategy, risk management, and governance.

What made it successful?

The transition has been successful thanks to strong collaboration and support across the organization. I’ve benefited from the trust of University leaders, peers, and teams, which allowed me to quickly build relationships, understand institutional priorities, and align cybersecurity initiatives with both academic and administrative needs.

What was the biggest challenge in adapting to your new role?

One of the biggest challenges has been navigating the complexity of a post‑secondary environment while balancing security, risk, and usability. For me, this means ensuring strong security posture and compliance while supporting research, learning, teaching, and administrative operations in a highly decentralized setting.

What tasks do you find AI most helpful for in your role?

On the personal front, I mainly use AI as a productivity boost. Things like email starters when I’m staring at a blank page, quick spelling or wording checks, and bouncing around ideas before sharing them. It’s also handy for tightening messages or summarizing long documents so I can work more efficiently and focus on the bigger picture. I also really like to use NotebookLM to learn about various subjects; I pick various information sources (YouTube, PDFs, Forums) and ask NotebookLM to create a podcast for me.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career change?

GO! Do it. I will always encourage career progression, whether horizontal or vertical. It’s always a good idea to follow your passions, overcome new challenges, and continue learning new things.

How can colleagues help someone transition into their new responsibilities?

Include them early, share context generously, and encourage open communication. Regular check‑ins, introductions to key stakeholders, and reinforcing that questions are welcome, all go a long way in helping someone succeed in a new role.

What do you look forward to in your day?

Working with dedicated colleagues and supporting teams as they strengthen the University’s security posture while enabling its academic and research mission.
