Sylvain Léonard, Senior Systems Manager, Faculty of Social Sciences
Meet Sylvain - Senior Systems Manager, Faculty of Social Sciences

What was your last career change?

In 2010, I moved from coordinating IT development at Student Enrolment Management (SEM), where I had worked since 1997, to my current role as Senior Systems Manager at the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS).

What made it successful?

As soon as I joined FSS in 2010, we began developing several digital tools that significantly improved the Faculty’s administrative operations.

What was the biggest challenge in adapting to your new role?

When working centrally at SEM, I had multiple accesses to the Student Information System (SIS) at the time. When I arrived at FSS, I had to work with various centralized services to obtain certain accesses, which was a long and winding process that took time to complete. It was a unique situation since we were the first Faculty to make this kind of request.

What tasks do you find AI most helpful for in your role?

Right now, chat-based AI is extremely helpful in many aspects of my work. I also perform technical analyses on our infrastructure and databases, and optimize code in PHP and .NET.

We’re currently developing a system to analyze the syllabi for over 1,500 courses each year to better determine and mange processes for midterms and finals—whether they are in person, online, or are special types such as deferred.

How can colleagues help someone transition into their new responsibilities?

Mentoring, coaching, support.

What do you look forward to in your day?

The human interaction I get from meeting with clients and collaborating on the development of new tools.

What three items would you bring if you were shipped to a deserted island?

My jet ski, my golf clubs and a fishing rod.
