Biography

David A. Robertson

David A. Robertson is an award-winning author, editor, and speaker whose work explores Indigenous issues, mental health, and freedom of expression. A member of Norway House Cree Nation, he lives in Winnipeg. Robertson has written across genres for children, young adults, and adults, with notable works including the novel The Theory of Crows, the memoir Black Water, the picture books When We Were Alone and On the Trapline, and the middle-grade series The Misewa Saga. He is a two-time Governor General’s Literary Award winner and has received numerous other honours, including the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award, the Alexander Kennedy Isbister Award for Non-Fiction, the Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award, and the Writers' Union of Canada Freedom to Read Award. His podcast Kiwew, which he wrote and hosted, won the 2021 RTDNA Prairie Region Award for Best Podcast. In recognition of his contributions to literature and social advocacy, Robertson was awarded a Doctor of Letters from the University of Manitoba in 2023 and a Doctor of Laws from the University of Lethbridge in 2025.
