I am an international student and am studying online from abroad in the fall of 2021. Can I take part in the CO-OP program and complete a work placement in Canada, in the Summer 2022 term?
To take part in CO-OP and be eligible to secure a summer 2022 work placement in Canada, you must secure the following four documents by January 2022 at the latest:
- Canadian study permit
- Canadian CO-OP work permit
- Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- Canadian bank account details
Although you can apply for both permits from abroad, they are only issued, and therefore made official, once you arrive in Canada.
If I want to continue studying from abroad in the Winter 2022 term, can I still take part in a CO-OP work placement in the summer of 2022?
If you are in possession of all of four items listed above, it may be possible for you to take part in CO-OP. However, we have noticed that many employers are requiring employees to be physically inside Canada in order to hire them. Alternatively, you could find your own work placement in your country of residence. If you plan to do so, please inform the CO-OP Office as soon as possible.
Can I speak with someone if I have immigration-related questions or need more clarifications?
Yes. In fact, we strongly encourage you to participate in the International Office’s weekly online “SOS Immigration” sessions. These sessions are your direct access to the University of Ottawa’s immigration advisors.
