Appointed for a five-year term, the new Co-Directors bring complementary expertise that reflects the breadth of the Faculty of Law’s offerings in environmental law. Professor Hubert Ta’s research focuses on the intersection of environmental protection, biodiversity, and economic development, with particular attention to the extractive sector and environmental governance in a global context. Her academic and professional background spans law, economics, and population studies, and includes experience as a climate change advisor with the Government of Québec. She is widely engaged in international research networks, including initiatives on climate litigation, environmental law, and sustainable development.
Professor Chalifour, meanwhile, is a leading scholar in environmental law, climate policy, and environmental justice. She is cross-appointed to the Institute of the Environment, where she contributes to interdisciplinary teaching and supervision in environmental sustainability. Professor Chalifour’s research examines climate change law, carbon pricing, the constitutional dimensions of environmental regulation, and environmental human rights. She has also played a significant role in shaping Canadian environmental policy through expert commentary, public engagement, and participation in major constitutional litigation on carbon pricing.
The appointment of Professors Hubert Ta and Chalifour brings together leadership from both Sections of the Faculty of Law, underscoring CELGS’s commitment to advancing research on the legal dimensions of environmental sustainability across legal traditions.
The Faculty also wishes to acknowledge the leadership of Professor Thomas Burelli, who concludes his mandate as Director of CELGS. We thank Professor Burelli for his dedication, research leadership, and contributions to the growth and visibility of CELGS during his tenure.
