Job Summary:
Full-Time Junior Technician position to perform animal breeding and colony maintenance as well as genotyping is available in the Ferguson laboratory at the University of Ottawa’s department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, located at Roger Guindon Hall. Start date: June 1, 2024. The job in the short term will require performance of administrative tasks. The position will be for 9 months and will have the option to be extended.
Dr. Ferguson’s laboratory is interested in the regulation of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling. The laboratory studies the molecular mechanisms underlying the signaling, endocytosis and recycling of GPCRs and how this regulates the cell biology of GPCR function in cell culture as well as animal models of disease. The focus of the laboratory is on Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s disease, stress and anxiety and hypertension and involves the study of glutamate.
The position will involve: Essential to the position will be skill demonstrated in mouse genotyping by PCR, breeding, genetic crossing and mouse colony maintenance as well as lab management, ordering and data analysis and record keeping. Additional experience with cell culture, molecular biological techniques, site directed mutagenesis, siRNA, CRISPR/Cas9, SDS PAGE, immunoblot, immunohistochemistry, and ELISA would be beneficial to the candidate. The successful candidate will be expected to work in coordination with the PI to facilitate the research and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the laboratory. The candidate requires a strong work ethic and enthusiasm to work independently while being part of a research team.
Essential Qualifications:
Minimum of Undergraduate Degree in a related field, Technical College Degree in a related field, and/or minimum of 1 year experience in research or working as an animal technician. Preferable either M.Sc. or veterinary care certificate required.
Practical experience with mice (prefer mice and rats)
Experience using computer systems and software, particularly Microsoft Office software
Excellent written and oral communication skills (prefer bilingual in French and English, but English is essential)
Support is in accordance with University of Ottawa standards. This is a non-unionized contractual research staff position (35hr/week, with flexible hours including some weekend hours) at the level of a Junior Technician NR1.
