CCERBAL 2027

Overview

The rapid proliferation in artificial intelligence in recent years has brought about significant affordances as well as challenges in the language sciences, and in language teaching and learning, in particular. Researchers are now examining the use of AI and digital literacies in multiple languages in everyday communication contexts, promoting the critical use of AI tools in educational contexts, and advocating for the incorporation of human intelligence – especially artistic, creative, and human-centred activities, that complement the adoption of AI. Important questions arise as to how we can continue to advance a social justice agenda that resists the predominant use of English with emerging digital tools/AI, and instead, use them to advance bi/multilingualism. Furthermore, debates have emerged as to whether and how to limit the power of artificial intelligence in diverse contexts.

To address these issues and questions, the CCERBAL conference aims to bring together interdisciplinary researchers and educators that explore bilingualism and multilingualism within this changing context. The conference encourages studies in the areas of language use, learning, teaching, and assessment across educational levels and programs - such as in K-12 and post-secondary immersion/CLIL, heritage language learning, or Indigenous language learning and revitalization – but also in contexts outside the classroom – be it in the workplace, at home, or through artistic and cultural practices, or through the use of social media and other digital tools in everyday life.

It is hoped that through interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration amongst linguists, critical applied linguists, language educators, and experts in sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and other related fields, this conference will harness the power of collective human intelligence to shape the direction of bilingualism and multilingualism in a changing world.
